The reading talks about the CCC’s theories of music subculture and the problems that have arisen from these theories.
- Dance music enthusiasts are not limited to a specific music. DJ’s take music from other music (songs that are not their own) and mix it all together to make pieces that “fit” them. They create the style, not let the style create them.
- As in the paper, Neo-tribal musicians take bits of music that they [the people] like, and put it together, discarding the bits that don’t satisfy their needs and wants, just as the sociologists and theorists pick apart the CCC’s “theory of subculture” to suit their own theories and throw away the ideas that are not suited.
- Subculture should only be used as an extremely broad term, and not as a definitive point for all youth with regard to style, appearance, and musical taste.
ok so this blog isn’t finished… but it was really just so i could get all that stuff down that i had to read.

Today’s lecture was really mostly about the way in which we can visualise our thoughts and ideas so that others can understand the direction in which we are heading for our projects. The main point to note was about:
Sketching is an extremely useful way of explaining our thought processes visually. They are only rough conceptual designs, but are enough to put a theoretical idea that holds no shape or form, onto paper in a physical form so others can understand.
Acting out the interactions that are to take place. Similar to when we had to act out where the words would be on the screen and how they would move around [information visualisation 2006]. This gives a better understanding of the sequence of events that take place within the project.

Once our groups were formed, we got into discussions about project ideas and the general direction we wanted to head in. My group was assigned a “variation on mirrors” theme.
some general points that i noted while we were reading over all of the (23) ideas were:
- people were to have their photo or real-time video taken upon entering the gallery
- use of screens – tv or compute, as the means of displaying the work
- space constraints
- ubiquitous computing needs to be thought about more thoroughly
- some ideas contained ethical concerns – aging people’s photo’s, changing their facial features, taking photo’s without permission
Ideas we kind of threw together, guided by other peoples thoughts are listed.
- On the wall of the gallery, there are a sequence of screens that will be made to look like windows of a viewing platform (like in a zoo -to look at animals in the glass enclosures). Imagine what it would be like to be in an enclosure and have people looking at you, pointing, discussing etc. These are the images that will be shown on the screens. The people actually stopping and looking at you throught the screen would be triggered when you are in front of a picture. When you simply walk past, the images displayed on the screens will be of groups of people walking past.
- As people enter the gallery, their photos will be taken, or real time video feeds. When they enter into the space, they will see a series of artworks (displayed on screens) that are all of the person, but in an altered way. Each piece would have had a different effect or filter added to it, to alter it’s appearance. For example, one might be a sin city style, one would be a water colour painting, another might be a cartoon version moving as the user does. *Think more on these effects*
- There was also the idea of having a movement driven piece, where the user, by their movement, or lack of, makes the artwork come to life or even just be displayed. There are some issues with this idea, dealing with the constraints of the space we are using – public, and cannot be limited to only one user/viewer at one time.

It would be rare, but what if the person entering the instalment didn’t have a mobile phone? Also the “dome” environment this instalment talks about is a large scale work, where we have limited space and only so much altering we can do to that space.

Doodles is an installation that uses mobile phone charms in a dome environment which enables visitors to see the Radio Frequency Energy that is generated by cellular phones. Visitors are invited to stand inside this dome and make telephone calls to their friends. This instalation makes people aware of what is actually going on in the ubiquitous computing world of mobile technology. The interactive element is that when the participants actually use their phones they create the energy and the “doodles” to activate. This is an interesting way to create an artwork because the user is really the artist using pre made artforms.

Because all the orb does is change colour, if there were going to be multiples of people actually seeing an instalment such as this, they would need to know what the different colours mean so as to not get confused. Also because the orb can be set to different information to visualise, there would be differnt rules to observe when using it as to which colour goes with which piece of information. Confusing!

The ambient orb is a new way of monitoring everyday data in a more design oriented way. Visually pleasing to look at, the orb changes its colour depending on what is happening. For example this could be used to display the current weather situation – blue for rain, or red for no rain.

Technology to actually create the digitalised easel could pose the biggest threat to production and also the budget would need to be considered. Fibre optic bristles for the paint brush, but more importantly the actual “canvas” would be a big constraint also.

In the come to pieces instalment, issues that could hinder creation, involve privacy of the participants. Not everyone will want to get their photo/ video of themselves taken therefore there has to be some way of not capturing these people. Technology is also another issue.

The main constraint for this I would believe to be the back end coding to get it all working. However, if we were able to learn how to do it then the only big constraint is actually where to put it. The space required for the instalment itself and also the technological set up would be too great for the space that we have available to work with.
